trasee prin romania, comfort, distractie Bran Castle was originally a fortress built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in the year 1212. It was known by the name of Dietrichstein at the time. Later on, towards the end of the 13th century, it was taken over by the Saxons in that region in order to protect the City of Brasov, an important trade center. Vlad Tepes used Bran Castle as headquarters for his incursions into Transylvania. This castle should not be mistaken for the actual Castle Dracula (now in ruins), which is located on the Arges River, at a more secluded site. On 1920, the fortress was donated to the royal family and transformed in its summer residence. Arranged by Queen Maria into a most romantic castles: the old garret became the fourth floor, the old cylindrical tower with defense gallery became an apartment, Gothic stone arches framed the entrance doors, stairs and boarded floors were rebuilt. When she died in 1938, she ask in her will that her heart should be kept in her residence from Balcic; lately because of political movements her heart was taken from there in a box decorated with 307 precious stones and hidden in the stone walls of Bran castle....
